Thanks to Christine Hartley for updating information on the Faulkners.
I have been doing my own additional research into some of the passengers, and particularly the Whittakers. Robert
Whittaker was the eldest son of Edmund and his wife Ann [Royley]. He was born on 1st Feb 1794 and baptised fifteen days later
at St Mary The Virgin, the parish church in Bury. Two siblings came along - Tomas in 1795 and Alice in 1799 before the birth
of his sister Mary on 15th February 180. A final sister, Ann, was born in 1809. Robert married Catherine Sherwin
on 18th September 1822 in Bury and the marriage soon produced a son, James, on 30th July 1823. He was the only
child of the marriage. Robert's tinsmithing business was carried on at 7 Silver Street, Bury, according to Pigot's
1828 directory. Robert survived the wreck of the Rothsay Castle but his son did not, and in 1834 he wife died. The following
year on 24th February, he remarried, to Rachel Ashton, according to the Bishop's Transcripts. The marriage took place
at Middleton and was by licence. Robert himself died in 1849 and was buried on 14th Oct 1849. The best candidate for his second
wife is a Rachel Ashton born at Middleton in 1793 and baptised on 1st November. She was the daughter of a weaver, Samuel Ashton, and
his wife, and the family lived at Heap. Robert's sister Mary, who, unlike his wife, was with him on the Rothsay
Castle, also lost her only child, Thomas, in the disaster. Thomas was the illegitimate son of Mary and a local wheelwright,
Samuel Statter. The latter was the same age as Mary, born 19 June 1805, to George and Betty [Fletcher], so not quite twenty
when the boy was born. The parish record makes it clear that he was not Mary's husband, and after this reference he seems
to disappear from view in the records. It is possible that Mary lived with her brother and his wife. Later there is a Mary
Whittaker who lived as a housekeeper for the Warburtons at Edenfield, Bury. Her age matches 'our' Mary and she is
enumerated as a widow, but there is nothing to identify her as the survivor of the Rothsay Castle disaster.
